From Zanzibar: 9 Days Group Luxury Kilimanjaro Climb via Lemosho Route with Moshi Day Trip in Tanzania

Moshi – Lemosho Gate to Big Tree Camp

After breakfast at your hotel, you will be transferred to Lemosho Gate for park entry and permit registration. Your trek begins through lush rainforest, covering 6 km over 3–4 hours, gaining altitude from 7,800 ft to 9,500 ft. Along the trail, you will see vibrant wildlife and enjoy the peaceful beauty of the forest. Your first overnight stay will be at Big Tree Camp, where you will relax, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the next day’s trek.

Big Tree Camp to Shira I Camp

You will trek from Big Tree Camp into moorland terrain, gradually ascending toward Shira I Camp (11,500 ft). Over approximately 8–10 km in 5–7 hours, you will cross open plains with spectacular views of Kibo Peak. Along the trail, you will enjoy the vast beauty of the Shira Plateau and witness unique alpine flora. Shira I Camp provides a comfortable setting to rest, acclimatize, and enjoy dinner under the high-altitude sky.

Shira I Camp to Shira II Camp

You will continue east across the Shira Plateau, covering 14 km over 5–7 hours, reaching Shira II Camp (13,800 ft). This high-altitude plateau is among the highest in the world, offering panoramic views of Kibo and surrounding peaks. You will enjoy the moorland landscape, passing streams and lush meadows. Shira II Camp provides a peaceful atmosphere for rest and preparation before the more challenging sections ahead.

Shira II Camp to Lava Tower Camp to Barranco Camp

You will trek 7 km over 4–6 hours, first ascending toward Lava Tower (4,600 m), also known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” After lunch at the base of Lava Tower, you will descend to Barranco Camp (13,000 ft). This day serves as a crucial acclimatization stage, helping your body adjust for the summit attempt. Along the way, you will enjoy dramatic semi-desert landscapes and panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s peaks.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation (ft): 13,000ft to 13,100ft

Distance: 5km

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Full Board at Karanga Camp.

After breakfast, leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley campsite. This is a short day meant for acclimatization.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation (ft): 13,100ft to 15,300ft

Distance: 4 km

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Full Board at Barafu Camp.

After breakfast, leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. Continue up to the Barafu Camp. At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here you make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

You will wake around 2 a.m. to begin the final ascent. Trekking 5 km over 7–8 hours to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) via Stella Point (5,756 m), you will witness a breathtaking sunrise if the weather permits. After summit celebrations and photos, you will descend 12 km over 4–6 hours to Mweka Camp (10,000 ft), stopping at Barafu for refreshments. This day tests your endurance but rewards you with a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Mweka Camp to Moshi

You will descend 10 km through montane rainforest to Mweka Gate (5,400 ft), where you will receive your summit certificate. From here, you will be transferred by vehicle back to your luxury hotel in Moshi. Enjoy a shower, relax, and celebrate your Kilimanjaro achievement with your guides and team.

Moshi – Materuni Village For Day Trip

After breakfast in the hotel, from Moshi you will leave Moshi at 8:00 am to depart to the village of Materuni, approximately 1,800 m above sea level. This lush rainforest region is known for producing some of the best coffee in East Africa. Start the day with a visit toa small coffee farm and learn about how the coffee is grown, harvested, and processed locally. Tryyour hand at processing, roasting, and preparing a fresh cup of coffee in the local Chagga way.Once you have finished enjoying your coffee break, you will depart on a beautiful 45-minute hikethrough the hills and valleys en route to the waterfalls. Along the way your guide will teach you about local plants and how they are used for food and traditional medicine, as well as give you more insight into the local Chagga culture. The waterfalls are hidden in a pristine valley with cliffstowering up to 200ft overhead. The water falls straight down in a curtain to land in a small pool where you can relax, take lunch, and go for a swim in the chill mountain waters. after that, we drive back to Moshi.

Moshi to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

You will depart Moshi by being transfered directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your home flight departure.
