Enter the afro-alpine zone of giant lobelias and groundsels before a final boggy push to John Matte Huts. This is considered one of the toughest days, taking 7–8 hours.

The final section is a muddy lakeside trail leading to Bujuku Huts, a cold but rewarding overnight stop. This stage takes 5–6 hours.
