From Moshi in Tanzania: 7 Days Group Budget Kilimanjaro Trek via Rongai Route

Moshi to Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Elevation: 800m (Moshi) - 1,950m (Rongai Gate) - 2,600m (Simba Camp) 

Distance: 8km 

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours 

Habitat: Montane Forest 

After breakfast at Kilimanjaro White House Hotel, you will be transferred to the Rongai Gate, the starting point of your trek. After completing park formalities, you will begin your hike through the lush montane forest. The trail is a gentle ascent, allowing you to acclimatize to the altitude. As you hike, enjoy the sounds of the forest, and you may spot wildlife like monkeys, birds, and other animals. Your first stop is Simba Camp, where you’ll enjoy a packed lunch and some time to rest before a hearty dinner and overnight stay.

Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp

Elevation: 2,600m - 3,450m 

Distance: 6km 

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours 

Habitat: Moorland 

After breakfast at Simba Camp, you’ll continue the hike through the moorland zone. The vegetation becomes more sparse as you climb, and you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. The trail ascends gently, offering stunning views of the mountains and valleys. At Second Cave Camp, you’ll have a well-deserved lunch and time to rest. The campsite is nestled under the cliffs of Kilimanjaro, providing great photo opportunities. Dinner will be served before you settle in for the night.

Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Elevation: 3,450m - 3,600m 

Distance: 5km 

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours 

Habitat: Moorland 

Today, the trail will take you through more moorland, with dramatic views and an expansive feeling of wilderness. You’ll encounter interesting plants, such as the giant lobelias and senecios, and possibly catch a glimpse of some wildlife. The terrain is a gradual climb to Kikelewa Camp. After lunch, you’ll have the afternoon to relax and enjoy the views. The camp is located in a beautiful spot, offering an excellent opportunity for some downtime. In the evening, enjoy a warm meal and settle into your tents.

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Huts

Elevation: 3,600m - 4,330m 

Distance: 6km 

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours 

Habitat: Alpine Desert 

Today, you’ll enter the alpine desert zone, characterized by a more barren landscape with rocky terrain. The views become more dramatic, and you may feel the altitude as you ascend. The trail leads toward Mawenzi Tarn huts at the base of the striking Mawenzi Peak. Once at the camp, you can rest and acclimatize to the high altitude. Enjoy a packed lunch on the way and then a hot dinner at the campsite. Mawenzi Tarn huts is one of the most scenic campsites on the route, offering stunning views of the Mawenzi peaks.

Mawenzi Tarn Huts to Kibo Huts

Elevation: 4,330m - 4,700m 

Distance: 9km 

Hiking Time: 5-6 hours 

Habitat: Alpine Desert 

After breakfast, you’ll head towards Kibo Huts, located just below the summit of Kilimanjaro. The environment becomes more harsh and barren as you reach the alpine desert zone. The terrain is rocky, and you will begin to feel the effects of the altitude. You’ll have a packed lunch on the way, and upon arrival at Kibo Huts, you will have some time to rest before your summit attempt the next day. An early dinner will be served in preparation for the climb that begins around midnight. There are Basic facilities with public toilets, oxygen if required.

Kibo Huts to Summit (Uhuru Peak) to Horombo Huts

Elevation: 4,700m - 5,895m - 3,720m 

Distance: 22km 

Hiking Time: 10-14 hours 

Habitat: Summit Zone (Arctic) 

This is the long and challenging day of your trek—summit day! You will start your ascent to Uhuru Peak around midnight, trekking through the night in freezing temperatures. The climb is steep, and you may feel fatigued as you near the summit. After reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters and enjoying the breathtaking views, you’ll begin your descent to Horombo Hut. The trek down is long, but it’s a relief after reaching the summit. You will arrive at Horombo Hut in the late afternoon or evening, where you will have dinner and rest.

Horombo Huts to Marangu Gate to Moshi

Elevation: 3,720m - 1,830m 

Distance: 27km 

Hiking Time: 6-8 hours 

Habitat: Rainforest 

The final day of your trek takes you down through the lush rainforest to Marangu Gate. The descent is long but not too difficult. Along the way, you’ll encounter beautiful forest scenery, and you may see wildlife like monkeys and tropical birds. Once at the gate, you will complete your final registration and receive your summit certificate. Afterward, you’ll be transferred back to Moshi.

Departure from Moshi

After a restful breakfast at Kilimanjaro White House Hotel, you’ll be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure flight. You’ll leave with incredible memories of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
