From Moshi in Tanzania: 7 Days Group Budget Kilimanjaro Hike via Machame Route

Machame Gate (1800 m) to Machame Camp

Elevation: 1,800 m to 2835 m 

Distance: 11 km 

Hiking Time: 5-6 hours 

Habitat: Montane Forest/ Rain Forest. 

The trek commences at Machame gate (1830m), leading you through the vibrant lower slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. As you ascend gradually, you can relish the varied plant and animal life of the rainforest. Eventually, you'll reach the initial Machame Camp, positioned at an elevation of 3000m. On clear days, you might catch a glimpse of Kibo's glaciated dome if the evening clouds allow.

Machame Camp (2835 m) to Shira Cave Camp (3,750 m) 4-6 hours

Elevation: 2835 m to 3,750 m 

Distance: 5 km 

Walking Time: 5-6 hours 

Habitat: Moorland. 

Ascending a steep ridge for a shorter day, one reaches a small semicircular cliff called Picnic site. The journey then progresses with a milder ascent through the lower alpine moorland, renowned for its enchanting wild alpine flowers. The Shira Cave Camp offers the most breathtaking views of Kibo peak.

Shira Cave Camp (3750 m) to Barranco Camp (3900 m) VIA Lava Tower Camp 4600 m

Elevation: Shira Cave Camp 3,750 m to Barranco Camp 3,900 m 

Distance: 10 km 

Walking Time: 5 to 6 hours 

Habitat: Moorland 

Embark on a condensed journey ascending a steep ridge to reach the quaint semicircular cliff named Picnic Site. Proceed with a more gradual ascent through the lower alpine moorland, renowned for its exquisite wild alpine flowers. The Shira Cave Camp offers breathtaking vistas of the majestic Kibo peak.

Barranco Camp (3900 m) to Karanga Camp (3995 m)

Elevation: Barranco Camp 3,900 m to Karanga Camp 3995 m 

Distance: 6 km 

Hiking Time: 3.5 to 4 hours 

Habitat: Moorland 

Accommodations: Karanga Camp. 

Ascending the eastern wall provides a challenging ascent, bringing you beneath the impressive Heim Glacier with the potential for breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Following this, a steep ascent up the Great Barranco Wall separates you from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. The trail then descends into the alpine desert of the Karanga Valley, culminating in a final steep climb to reach Karanga Camp.

Karanga Camp (3995 m) to Barafu Camp (4,673 m.)

Elevation: Karanga Camp 3995 m to Barafu Camp 4,673 m 

Distance: 4 km 

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours 

Habitat: Alpine Desert 

Accommodations: Barafu Camp. 

Ascending sharply from Karanga, the journey continues along a straightforward trail of packed scree, offering expansive vistas across the barren and arid terrain up to Barafu Camp. Both the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks come into view from the campsite. Following a satisfying lunch amid the camp's warmth, the rest of the day is dedicated to relaxation and preparations for the impending final ascent, leading to an early evening summit trek.

Barafu Camp (4673 m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) to Mweka Camp (3100 m)

Elevation: Barafu Camp 4,673 m to Uhuru Peak 5,895 m Via Stella Point 5756m 

Distance: 4.3 km ascent to Stella Point 

Distance: 5 km Barafu to Uhuru Peak Ascent. 

Hiking Time: 6-7hours ascent / 7-8 hours descent 

Habitat: Alpine Desert 

Accommodations: Mweka Camp. 

Awaken prior to midnight under the concealment of darkness. Embark on a challenging ascent over unstable volcanic scree, featuring well-graded zig-zags. Maintaining a deliberate and consistent pace, you will ascend to the rim of the primary crater, Stella Point, standing at an elevation of 5,735 meters. Take a brief respite there to relish the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those still feeling energized can gradually proceed on a two-hour round trip along the crater rim.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation: Mweka Camp 3,100 m to Mweka Gate 1,640 m 

Distance: 10 km 

Hiking Time: 4 -5 hours 

Habitat: Montane Forest 

Strolling gently through the rainforest leads you to the Mweka gate, where successful participants are awarded summit certificates. Following lunch, you return to Moshi/Arusha by car.

Moshi to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

After a restful night at Kilimanjaro White House Hotel, you wake up early, proud to have completed your Kilimanjaro trek. You enjoy breakfast and do some light stretching before heading out. By 5:00 AM, you take a shuttle to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), reflecting on the journey you’ve just completed. Upon arrival, you thank your guides and porters, complete your check-in, and head to the departure gate, feeling accomplished and excited to return home.
