The journey begins with a climb over steep hills and a few scattered rocks, followed by a gradual ascent toward the Lava Tower, which stands at 4,600 meters—a 150-meter-high volcanic plug located just outside the main mountain. Around midday, you’ll pause for lunch. At this altitude, some hikers may begin to experience a mild headache due to the elevation. After reaching the Lava Tower, you’ll descend for roughly two hours along a dusty, rocky trail before arriving at Barranco Camp for an overnight stay.

At Stella Point, you’ll likely meet climbers from other routes such as Marangu and Rongai, and together you’ll continue for about an hour to reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. Along the way, or at the summit, you’ll witness a stunning sunrise. After spending 10 to 15 minutes at the peak for photos and to enjoy the view, you’ll begin your descent back to Barafu Camp for a well-deserved rest and brunch. You will then continue descending to Mweka Camp.
