Following breakfast and a short orientation, you will embark on a 45-minute journey to the Marangu Gate for registration prior to commencing your trek. The route takes you through a lively rainforest  route to Mandara Huts. You have the option to make a brief detour to Maundi Crater for breathtaking views of northern Tanzania and Kenya. As you proceed along the trail, keep an eye out for the towering Eucalyptus trees, a variety of bird species, and the unique black-and-white Colobus monkeys.

Mandara Huts to Horombo Huts

You will depart from the verdant rainforest and traverse an upward path through the expansive moorland that leads to the Horombo Huts. During this trek, you will be able to appreciate breathtaking vistas of Mawenzi and the peak of Kibo. Keep an eye out for the remarkable giant lobelias and groundsels that embellish the terrain. As you ascend further, you might start to experience the impacts of the rising altitude.

Horombo Huts to Kibo Huts

Kibo Huts to Uhuru Peak then Horombo Huts

Your ascent to the summit commences in the early morning hours—between midnight and 2 a.m.—as you navigate a steep trail of loose scree or snow that leads to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From this point, the expedition proceeds to Uhuru Peak, the highest elevation in Africa, where breathtaking views await. Be sure to capture a photograph at the summit to commemorate your achievement. The descent initiates shortly thereafter, with a pause at Kibo for lunch and a brief respite, followed by the trek down to Horombo Camp. This segment begins in complete darkness, making headlamps or flashlights indispensable. The temperatures will be exceedingly cold until you start your descent, so it is crucial to wear all your warm layers. This portion represents the most demanding aspect of the entire climb, characterized by numerous switchbacks. Sustaining a slow, steady pace—pole pole—and maintaining a resilient mindset will be essential for reaching the summit.

Horombo Huts to Marangu Gate to Moshi

Following breakfast, we commence our descent through the moorland, heading towards Mandara Huts. From that point, we proceed along a picturesque trail that winds through the verdant rainforest to the Marangu Gate of Kilimanjaro National Park. The lower portions of the trail may be damp and muddy, thus it is recommended to utilize gaiters and trekking poles. While lightweight attire such as shorts and T-shirts is appropriate, ensure that you have your rain gear and warm layers readily available. At the Marangu Gate, a vehicle will be prepared to transport you back to your hotel in Moshi. Remember to express your gratitude by tipping your guides and porters—it is a well-deserved acknowledgment of your adventure.
