After breakfast, you start a 45-minute transfer to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate for registration. The hike begins through lush rainforest with towering Eucalyptus trees and black-and-white Colobus monkeys. Optionally, a short diversion to Maundi Crater offers panoramic views of northern Tanzania and Kenya. The trail gently ascends to Mandara Huts, allowing time to acclimatize, enjoy lunch, and rest for the night.

Horombo Huts to Marangu Gate, drive to Moshi

Elevation: 12,100 ft / 3,700 m to 5,500 ft / 1,700 m

Distance: 18 km

Time: 5-7 hours

After breakfast, descend through moorland toward Mandara Huts, then continue through rainforest to Marangu Gate. The lower sections may be wet and muddy; gaiters and trekking poles are advised. Upon arrival, collect your summit certificate. Transfer by vehicle back to your mid-range hotel in Moshi. Rest, enjoy refreshments, and reflect on the incredible achievement of climbing Africa’s highest peak.

Mandara Huts to Horombo Huts

Upon arrival at Horombo Huts, you’ll rest, hydrate, and enjoy a hearty dinner as your body prepares for the higher-altitude climbs ahead.

Horombo Huts to Kibo Huts

From Horombo huts, you trek toward the barren lunar landscape of the Kilimanjaro Saddle, located between Mawenzi and Kibo. The scenery gradually transitions from heath to a stark alpine desert. After reaching Kibo Huts, rest and have an early dinner. The campsite sits at the base of Kibo’s crater, providing an ideal staging point for your midnight summit attempt. Acclimatization is key to preparing your body for the altitude ahead.

Kibo Huts to Uhuru Peak and descent to Horombo Huts

In the early hours, around midnight, you begin the Uhuru Peak summit push along a steep, rocky path toward Gilman’s Point. From there, traverse the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. Pause for photos and take in the breathtaking views before starting the descent. After a short rest and lunch at Kibo, continue down to Horombo Huts. The descent covers 14 km, taking 6–8 hours, with careful navigation over loose rocks and scree.

Moshi to Zanzibar

After breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your flight back to Zanzibar, concluding your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
