After checking in at the Lemosho Gate, you'll pass through varied farmland with expansive views of the surrounding plains until you arrive at the Lemosho trailhead. A scenic forest clearing nearby provides a perfect place for lunch before the hike begins. The trek starts gently along a narrow path winding through a vibrant forest inhabited by wildlife like buffalo. The day concludes at Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as Big Tree Camp, located at 7,800 feet above sea level.

You will shortly leave the forest behind and step into the moorland zone, where tall heather blankets the landscape. As the trail gently climbs, wide-open views emerge while nearing the edge of the Shira Plateau. If afternoon mist drifts in, the feeling of solitude deepens. Tonight, you’ll camp at Shira One, situated at 11,500 feet in the plateau’s center.

After a relatively short hike along a picturesque stream, you’ll reach Shira 2 Camp in time for a relaxing lunch. This day offers ideal acclimatization, with the option to join an afternoon walk led by your guide.

Start your day with a steady climb, enjoying expansive views as you leave the moorland plateau and trek along lava ridges beneath the majestic glaciers of the Western Breach. After a lunch break near Lava Tower (14,900 ft), descend into the scenic Barranco Valley and spend the night at Barranco Camp (12,790 ft), situated beneath towering cliffs with sweeping views of the plains below.

We begin with a demanding climb up the Barranco Wall, then continue along a gently undulating path on Kibo’s southeastern side, showcasing breathtaking views of the Southern Ice Fields. The terrain changes to loose scree, interspersed with green patches in sheltered spots. A brief hike from here leads us to Karanga Camp (13,100 ft), the last reliable water source before reaching the summit.

In the afternoon, embark on a brief acclimatization hike to the plateau near the base of the southeast valley. Spend the rest of the day resting and getting ready for the early morning final climb.

You’ll progress at a steady pace, with constant support from your climbing team, arriving at the Kibo rim before descending briefly into the caldera to reach Crater Camp. The afternoon is dedicated to rest, though optional short walks led by your guides are available.

After breakfast, you’ll begin your descent toward Mweka Gate, where you’ll be awarded your hard-earned summit certificates. The lower parts of the trail can be muddy and wet, so using gaiters and trekking poles is advisable. Light clothing such as T-shirts and shorts is sufficient, but be sure to have rain gear and a warm layer handy. Once you reach the gate, an Africa Natural Tours vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your luxury hotel in Moshi.
