Horombo Huts to Kibo Huts
Elevation: 12,100 ft / 3,700 m to 15,400 ft / 4,700 m
Distance: 10 km
Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
You will trek through high-altitude heathlands to Kilimanjaro’s saddle, the plateau between Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. You will enter a stark, lunar-like landscape before arriving at Kibo Huts, where you will rest and prepare for the midnight summit push.
Kibo Huts – Summknit (Uhuru Peak) – Horombo Huts
Elevation: 15,400 ft / 4,700 m to 19,300 ft / 5,895 m (up) and back to 12,100 ft / 3,700 m (down)
Distance: 4 km up / 14 km down
Time: 10–15 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
You will start your midnight summit ascent (12–2 a.m.) via scree and snow to Gilman’s Point, continuing to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. You will spend 10–20 minutes at the summit taking photos and soaking in the views. You will then descend via Kibo Huts for lunch and continue down to Horombo Huts, where you will rest and celebrate your summit achievement.
